The 5-step path

  1. Meet the basic requirements. 16 years or older, high school not required for the program (but helps for some employers), pass a criminal background check, complete required immunizations and a TB test.
  2. Enroll in a CNA training program. California requires completion of an approved training program — typically 60 hours of classroom theory + 100 hours of supervised clinical practice (160 hours total minimum).
  3. Pass the California state CNA certification exam. The exam has two parts: a written/oral test and a hands-on skills demonstration. Both must be passed to be certified.
  4. Apply for state certification. Submit your application to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Once approved, your name is added to the state CNA registry.
  5. Get hired. CNAs in California work in nursing homes, hospitals, home health, hospice, and assisted living. Demand is high — especially in the Central Valley.

How long does it take?

The fastest path is roughly 6–12 weeks from enrollment to certification. Programs vary by length and schedule format. Hybrid programs (online theory + in-person clinicals) often complete on the faster end because students can move through theory at their own pace.

How much does it cost?

CNA training in California typically ranges from about $1,200 to $3,000+ depending on the program. On top of tuition, plan for: a background check (~$50), a TB test (~$30), required immunizations, scrubs, and the state exam fee (~$100–$120). See how to pay for CNA training for funding options.

What's on the exam?

The California CNA exam covers patient care fundamentals: communication, vital signs, infection control, mobility assistance, personal care, nutrition and elimination, and resident rights. The skills portion requires demonstrating 5 randomly selected skills in front of a state evaluator. See our CNA Exam Prep Guide for a deeper breakdown.

What happens after you pass?

Once certified, you're on the state CNA registry and eligible to work in any licensed California healthcare facility. Starting pay in California typically ranges from $18–$22/hour, with shift differentials, overtime, and benefits at most facilities. See CNA salary in California for current pay data by region.
